갈대 A Reed

 

 

  갈대 / 신경림     

 

언제부턴가 갈대는 속으로

조용히 울고 있었다.

그런 어느 밤이었을 것이다. 갈대는

그의 온몸이 흔들리고 있는 것을 알았다.

 

바람도 달빛도 아닌 것.

갈대는 저를 흔드는 것이 제 조용한 울음인 것을

까맣게 몰랐다.

 -- 산다는 것은 속으로 이렇게

조용히 울고 있는 것이란 것을

그는 몰랐다.  

 

 

A Reed

 

For some time past, a reed had been

quietly weeping inwardly.

Then finally, one evening, the reed

realized it was trembling all over.

 

It wasn't the wind or the moon.

The reed was utterly unaware that it was its own

quiet inward weeping that was making it tremble.

It was unaware

that being alive is matter

of that kind of quiet inward weeping

 

 

 

신경림 시인

 Shin Kyong-Nim

 

1935년 충청북도 충주 출생

1956년 대학 3학년, '낮달', '갈대', '석상' 등이

<문학예술>지에 추천되어 등단함

1965년 침묵 끝에 서울로 돌아와 작품활동 전개.

1973년 시집 <농무> 출간

1974년 <농무> 증보판 출간. 제1회 만해문학상 수상

1981년 제8회 한국 문학작가상 수상

1985년 <달넘세>

1987년 장시집 <남한강>

1988년 <가난한 사랑노래>

1990년 기행시집 <길> 제 2회 이산문학상 수상

1993년 시집 <쓰러진 자의 꿈>

1998년 시집 <어머니와 할머니의 실루엣>

제 6회 대산문학상 수상

1984년 자유실천문인협의회의 고문직을 지내고, 민주화청년운동연합

지도위원을 지냈으며, 그해로부터 1989년까지 민요연구회 의장직을

1985년부터 1987까지 민족민주통일연합 중앙위원회 위원으로

1987년에는 전민련 감사 등을 지내며 민족과 문화의

 부흥을 위해 노력했다.

 

Shin kyong-Nim was born in 1935, He published his first poems in 1956

but then worked as Iaborer, publisshing nothing until 1965, His first

collection, Nongmu(Famers' Dance), was published in 1973, It received

the 1st Manhae Prize in 1974, Other volumes of his poetry include

Dalneomse (1985), Namhangang(1987), Gananhan sarangnorae(1988),

Gil (1990), Sseureojin ja ui kkum (1993), Eomeoni wa halmeoni ui

silhouette (1998), This last volume received the 1998 Daesan Literary

Award for Poetry, He has also published several collections of literary and

personal essays and anthologies, In recent years, Shin Kyong-Nim has

served at the head of the Association of Writers for National Literature,

and of the Federated Union of Korean Nationalist Artists.
